If there was one piece of art you could feature in, which one would it be and why?

It would have to be Bouvard et Pécuchet by Flaubert: its tragically funny, contains some of the greatest writing of the 19th Century, and because it illuminates how the mainstream tends to destroy our sense of self, which is happening now more than ever. Its just a great book, both high art and literal, and very funny.

Who inspires you?

For a long time it was barack obama - an extraordinary man, a great orator and writer and incredibly stylish. But day-to-day it’s new writers who are able to explain the world in different and exciting ways. werner herzog always if it’s about coffee. the poet helen mort is wonderful.

What are your cultural aspirations?

I am keen to make a film about the social power of anecdote–it amazes me how stories between people can tear down barriers. I was on the verge of being violently attacked once, and got the guy to back down by telling him a really stressful anecdote that had recently happened to me, which made him tell me one back, and then we were friends.

What are your favourite cultural cities in the world?

Sorry to be boring here but its London and New York. The people in these cities never fail to amaze me and I would really find it hard to imagine living anywhere else. London basically has everything and originates a lot of global culture.

What are you up to at the moment?

www.port-magazine.com plus a secret magazine project with an old friend in New York, under wraps for now!
