LEADING CULTURE DESTINATIONS:

Orsola de Castro is a pioneer and an internationally recognised opinion leader in sustainable fashion. After an early career as an artist of etching and drawing, she started From Somewhere in 1997, a revolutionary label that was the first to address the issue of pre-consumer waste and reproducibility in recycling for the fashion industry. From Somewhere‘s collaborations include upcycled collections for Jigsaw and Speedo. In September 2006 Orsola, started Estethica, the sustainable fashion area at London Fashion Week curated and organised for the British Fashion Council. Orsola is also a regular lecturer and speaker around the world, from the Chelsea College of Art and Design, the RCA, and Central Saint Martins, to the Hong Kong Design Institute, as well as TEDx and the IHT Luxury Summit, where she continues to make an impact on the future of fashion.

If there was one piece of art you could feature in, which one would it be?

I would like to be covered in glorious brocade cloth, my hair slightly shaved to the sides, dripping with pearls and jewellery, in a Gentile da Fabriano painting.

Who inspires you?

Anna Ackhmatova, Nina Cassian and Anne Sexton for their poetry. Dieter Roth's organised mess. Pistoletto, Penone, Angus Fairhurst. The old lady that runs the Electric Cafe in West Norwood for style.

What are your cultural aspirations? What do you still want to see, do and achieve?

I still want to see just about everything, and if not see it for the first time, at least see it once again.

What are your favourite cultural cities in the world?

CLASSIC: New York, Venice, Rome, London, it's force of habit, watching things I know will change in time. Although I also enjoy smaller places, I fell in love with Margate recently.

What are you up to at the moment?

For me, its Fashion Revolution all the way.
