She was founding editor-in-chief of Condé Nast Traveller UK, and also launched Condé Nast Traveller in China. On leaving Condé Nast she was appointed European Editor of Travel + Leisure. She is well connected in the visual arts, architecture and design as well as hotels, restaurants and the world of travel in general.
She has just stepped down from being a governor of the Royal College of Art after 15 years. Based in London, she has worked extensively with arts, design, lifestyle and travel opinion formers from around the globe, and has an extremely influential network of contacts that also reaches into the political sphere. She has won Editor of the Year seven times. She is married to the director of London's Design Museum.
If there was one piece of art you could feature in, which would it be and why?
I’d be one of the people in Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s 1338 fresco in the Fresco Palazzo Pubblico, Siena, The Allegory of Good and Bad Government. It’s a masterful depiction of life, especially relevant today when we all need good government.
Who inspires you and why? An artist, a family member, someone current or historical?
My daughter Olivia Sudjic, who is just about to publish her debut novel.
What are your cultural aspirations? What do you still want to see, do and achieve?
I want to see Burma and Bhutan – Bagan in Burma with its 2000 Buddhist monuments, and the mountain monasteries in Bhutan. I suppose I should have the aim to write Sarah Miller’s Guide to the Insider Secrets of Travelling the World…
What are your favourite cultural cities in the world and why?
The obvious – New York, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Madrid, Sydney – any city with great museums in fact. Looking at Istanbul, I’m excited by the Museum of Innocence – and also looking forward to the new Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town.
What are you up to at the moment and where can we find it?
