carla chan'S
LEADING CULTURE DESTINATIONS:

Carla Chan is a contemporary artist currently living and working in Hong Kong and Berlin. Much like the never-ending development of new technology, Carla considers media art as a medium with infinite possibilities for artistic expressions.

Her work has been selected and showcased extensively in Asia, Europe, South America as well as North America. Her art is minimal in style and form. Carla’s works often toy with the blurred boundaries between reality and illusion; figure and abstraction. Her recent practice focuses on ambiguity in nature and intents to bridge natural transformation and unpredictable computer algorithms. Her work is consolidated with a cohesive dynamic between form, means and content.

If there was one piece of art you could feature in, which would it be and why?

I could imagine being part of the artwork “foam” by the Japanese artist Kohei Nawa. She created this immersive huge cloud-like installation by amorphous bubbles and foam. Being in the installation make me feel like I’m part of these popping bubbles but at the same time viewing a very alien landscape.

Who inspires you?

Many people around me inspiring me. In a memorable lecture at university my professor taught me about a new way to look at art. A nice conversation during an opening, or even an interesting Ted talk can give me a lot of inspiration.

What are your cultural aspirations?

Travelling feeds my creative juices. I’m especially obsessed with the Scandinavian winter landscape and different oft-viewed nature areas that make me feel I am travelling to another planet. Those images are kept in my memory and eventually become my biggest source of inspiration.

What are your favourite cultural cities in the world?

I personally like Beijing a lot for exploring art and culture. The high population density creates a lot of hidden off-site locations which are very interesting. The famous art village and museums are wonderful, but I prefer walking along Hutong to discover many interesting spots.

What are you up to at the moment, and where can we find it?

Currently I’m preparing a video installation for the 22nd International Symposium on Electronic Art in Hong Kong and also a screening program at HEK (House of Electronic Arts Basel). You can find all updates on exhibitions and current projects online on my website.
