LEADING CULTURE DESTINATIONS:
Jemima WILSON is part of the editorial team at creative agency Show Media London, where she writes about art, design, horology, epicure, travel and style for magazines published by Show Media. These include Brummell magazine, ‘the little black book for the City’, and The Quarterly, a magazine billed as ‘the experts’ guide to good living’, published in association with The Week. Jemima was the winner of the Diversity NOW! competition journalism award in association with i-D Magazine in 2013.
If there was one piece of art you could feature in, which one would it be?
I love fashion photography from the 1930s and 40s. One of my favourite photographs from this period is the iconic image by Erwin Blumenfeld featured in Vogue in 1939, capturing model Lisa Fonssagrives swinging from the girders of the Eiffel Tower. This beautiful photograph evokes a sense of fearlessness and freedom, and, although I’m not keen on heights, I’m fascinated by views of cities from above. I’d like to face my fear and be photographed high above the streets of Paris, Lucien Lelong dress billowing in the wind…
Who inspires you?
I’m extremely fortunate that I meet people who inspire me every day, but I’m particularly inspired by people who can make me look at something I’m familiar with from a completely different perspective. Hormazd Narielwalla is a very exciting artist whose work is an interesting crossover between fashion, art and design, and he uses bespoke Savile Row tailoring patterns of customers now deceased to create amazing abstract collages that breathe new life into the patterns. I first met Hormazd when I was studying at University and he was a huge inspiration for the visual element of my final project as his work interprets the art of bespoke tailoring in a very modern way. It was wonderful to feature him in the Spring 2015 issue of The Quarterly Magazine a few years after I interviewed him for my dissertation.
What are your cultural aspirations?
Asia and South America are still fairly undiscovered for me and China and Brazil are next on my list of places to explore. I’m always looking out for emerging artists and designers in London and on my travels, as I’m passionate about supporting and promoting the work of talented young creatives.
What are your favourite cultural cities?
I’m very lucky to be based in London, with some of the world’s finest art, architecture, restaurants and fashion on my doorstep. I’ve lived in London for one year now and I think the city has the perfect balance of history and modernity - I’m still excited by it every day, as there is so much to see and experience. Away from London I love the rawness of Berlin, the romanticism of Paris and the vibrancy of Tokyo.
What are you up to at the moment?
I’m currently working on the design-themed autumn 2015 issue of The Quarterly magazine, as well as Brummell’s Inspirational Women issue published in September. For this issue I’m working on some special men’s and women’s style features and I’m writing a feature celebrating 30 inspirational women who are champions of diversity across a number of sectors, but who all have a strong connection to the City.
